Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal Material: Oil and tempera on canvas Collection: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Modern Collection Inv.: PE113 BIOGRAPHY Robert Delaunay received an artistic education from his uncles who initiated him into a very classical way of painting, and between 1902 and 1904 he worked as an apprentice at the Ronsin studios specialising in painting theatre backdrops. However, essentially Robert was self-taught, with his first paintings made in Brittany during the summer of 1903. Between this date and 1906, the work that he produced reflected the Post-Impressionist context, whereby a pictorial investigation of colour compliments and luminosity is articulated, aspects that would become central in the development of his work. In a second trip to Brittany, the artist found important references in Gauguin and the painting of the Pont-Aven group. In 1905 he also discovered the paintings of Seurat and Van Gogh in the retrospectives given at the XXI Independent Salon, as well as with the paintings of the so-called “Fauves”, exhibited in the Autumn Salon. During his participation in the Independent Salon of 1906, he met Jean Metzinger who introduced him to the work of Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross, after which Delaunay made several Divisionist paintings. This term was coined by Signac to define a pictorial technique where colours and tones are not mixed on the pallet, but rather are applied directly to the canvas in small, juxtaposed brushstrokes
