Filia Hospitalis (Zille).jpg

A cartoon by Heinrich Zille depicts Filia Hospitalis, the innkeeper's daughter, a trope present in student slang of the milieu. In this drawing, attention is drawn to the reaction of the landlady, who shows no concern at all about her unclothed daughter lying in a student's bed. What troubles her instead is the strange, modern device belonging to the doctor (ie, the camera and tripod). In many German university towns, students were addressed by the local population as "Doctor" from their very first semester. Above the bed hang two crossed Glockenschläger (Q1531918), the fencing weapons used in Berlin mensur duels. The objects on the bookshelf, including the skull, identify him as a medical student. The drawing is by Heinrich Zille (Q498211), who died on August 9, 1929; the work is in the public domain.
