The Philosopher Libertas Mounted on his Equal, Setting Out to Conquer…

Political satire; a man in a red liberty cap rides an ass with a bell round its neck, whipped from behind by a Medusa-headed harpy with a burning torch saying "Ye Sons of France awake to Glory!", into "Contrary Winds"; he carries a banner labelled "Decrees of the Rights of Man" which offers liberty in return for confiscating the property of the rich and a guillotine, and a money bag labelled "Means of Conquest"; attached to his saddle are bags labelled "Poison for Kings", "New flight-of-hand tricks for the use of the Convention" etc. 12 April 1795 Hand-coloured etching
